York Railway Company

The York Railway Company (YRC) operates approximately 40 miles of railroad in the general area between York and Hanover, Pennsylvania. It is comprised of the former Yorkrail, Inc. (x-WM) and Maryland & Pennsylvania (x-PRR) operations, purchased by Genesee & Wyoming from Emmons Transportation in Summer 2003. They are represented by the United Transportation Union.

Operations are focused mainly around the old WM/YKR trackage, with a variety of customers in York and West York. The WM side also serves as their mainline between York and Porters Sideling, PA (with trackage rights to Smiths Station & Hanover).

The former MPA side is largely unused. A pair of customers are located on the south end in Hanover, PA (ESAB and Sunoco Plastics). Trackage rights on CSXT's Hanover Subdivision are used to switch these industries located on opposite sides of Hanover. The combined YRC services the north end with a local based out of Lincoln Yard in West York, as well as the NS interchange at Windsor Street Yard. Up until recently, unit coal trains from the NS used to run down the MPA trackage to the P.H. Glatfelter paper mill in Spring Grove, but those trains are now routed over the WM side.
